Throughout his time working on his Master’s and Doctorate degree he further developed a therapy called ‘cuento’ therapy to increase ethnic identity and stronger social connections while this population assimilated and accommodated into the more traditional educational culture during the late 80’s and 1990’s. This was his doctorate dissertation with positive outcomes. His second favorite job was co-creating a Foundation to bring special needs children to swim with the dolphins. Dr. Shannon created the educational classroom activities to increase communication with the children and their family members utilizing the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and other social tools prior to swimming with the dolphins. Dr. Shannon utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and cuento therapy. He believes that in therapy we work as a team to make the correct diagnosis(es) while creating a treatment plan together to decrease mental health issues and increase motivation and self-love.
