We usually have what we need to manage through our struggles but then, something triggers a past trauma or painful experience, and we need to find a way to navigate our way back onto solid footing. Providing support by empathizing, listening, and building a connection is what I believe is the best foundation for growth in a therapeutic relationship.
In the “old” days, extended family or members of a small community provided what therapists now offer. Coming to therapy should feel like you are reaching out, as people have throughout history, to someone you think you can trust and who cares about helping you find a way to heal and grow.
