Bipolar disorders are brain disorders that cause changes in a person’s mood, energy and ability to function. Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health condition characterized by episodic changes in mood. These changes may happen in two extreme poles, either toward severe sadness, lack of energy and motivation (depression) or toward increased energy, motivation and at times irritability (mania). Bipolar disorder may lead to dramatic problems in patients’ personal, family and social lives and impair work functioning.
A less severe form of bipolar disorder may result in less significant increases in energy and motivation (hypomania), though the depressive episodes could still be as drastic. Diagnosis of bipolar disorder can be challenging given people with this disorder may also suffer from other mental health conditions, or the manifestation may be affected by drugs and alcohol.
Bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this condition can lead full and productive lives. Evidence-based treatment is available for bipolar disorder; however, the initial step for treatment is to be properly assessed and diagnosed by an experienced and knowledgeable mental health care professional.
