Nice to Meet You
Dr. Guthrey considers himself a client-centered psychologist who specializes in mindfulness skills. He also utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills, and is influenced by humanistic and transpersonal therapy as well as more traditional psychodynamic approaches. He particularly feels inspired to work with men struggling with existential issues, making life changes, or creating healthy and compassionate relationships.
Before creating his private practice based in Quincy, CA, and joining the PAWC network, Dr. Guthrey provided therapy and psychological testing in Asheville, NC. There, he also conducted psychological evaluations and therapeutic interventions for geriatric residents at nursing facilities. As a post-doc resident, he worked in a holistic wellness center where he provided counseling to people seeking to cope with stress and chronic illness. Here he taught mindfulness skills and provided coaching for making positive holistic changes in the participant's lives. During his graduate school education, Dr. Guthrey worked in a variety of mental health settings from substance Abuse (Physical, Sexual, etc.) detox and rehabilitation centers to community mental health organizations.
His aspiration for personal growth and spiritual development led Dr. Guthrey to seek his education in transpersonal psychology, which expands beyond traditional psychology to also encompass greater aspects of being human. This perspective has influenced him to better understand and work with his client's spiritual perspectives and experiences as well as helping him develop his own capacity for presence, acceptance, and compassion.
